The eight kootas

Nadi Koota and Nadi Dosha: Causes, Meaning and Exceptions

By Match Kundli Editorial Team · Updated · 4 min read

Nadi koota is worth 8 points, the most of any koota. Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis, called Aadi, Madhya and Antya. If the two birth stars belong to different nadis, the koota scores the full 8; if they belong to the same nadi, it scores 0 and the result is called Nadi Dosha. Traditional texts list exceptions under which the dosha is considered cancelled, and an astrologer will usually check them before giving advice.

Because Nadi is both heavy and all or nothing, it is often the first koota a family asks about.

What the three nadis are

Nadi means channel or pulse. In the matching tradition the three nadis are linked with the three doshas of Ayurveda: Aadi with vata, Madhya with pitta and Antya with kapha. The underlying idea is that two people of the same constitution are too alike in one particular respect, which tradition connects with health and, above all, with the well-being of children.

That connection is a belief within the tradition. It has not been shown by medical science, and it should not be confused with the genetic testing that doctors offer.

Which nakshatras belong to each nadi

The 27 stars are shared equally, nine to each nadi.

Read in their natural order, the stars follow a zigzag: Aadi, Madhya, Antya, then Antya, Madhya, Aadi, then Aadi again, and the pattern repeats. That is why neighbouring stars can share a nadi, as Krittika and Rohini do.

Why Nadi Dosha is taken so seriously

Three reasons come up again and again. First, it removes 8 points at once, so a pair that would otherwise score in the high 20s can drop into the low 20s. Second, the themes tradition attaches to it, health and children, are ones families care about deeply. Third, the dosha is common: with nine stars in each nadi, roughly one pair in three shares a nadi by chance.

The detailed report on this site calls Nadi "the one koota priests are usually most relieved to see clear", and notes that some families weigh a Nadi Dosha more heavily than the total score itself.

Exceptions described in traditional texts

Classical and later works describe situations in which Nadi Dosha is considered cancelled or does not apply. The ones cited most often are:

  • Same Moon sign, different nakshatras. For example, a Taurus Moon in Krittika and a Taurus Moon in Rohini share the Antya nadi but are in different stars of the same sign.
  • Same nakshatra, different Moon signs. This can only happen with the nine stars that straddle two signs: Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada.
  • Same nakshatra and sign, different padas. Some texts also accept this, while others do not.

Some astrologers add conditions based on the rulers of the two Moon signs. Practice varies widely, and the exceptions are usually confirmed by an astrologer looking at the full charts rather than applied mechanically. A shared nakshatra has a second effect worth knowing: it also places both counts on Janma in Tara koota, which this site scores as 0.

What this calculator shows

The tool reports the raw score. When both stars share a nadi, Nadi shows 0 out of 8 and a red note reads "Nadi Dosha — same Nadi", describing it as traditionally the most significant flag in this system even when the total is otherwise reasonable. The calculator does not decide whether an exception applies, so the score and total stay the same either way.

Because Nadi depends on the nakshatra, it is one of the results most affected by an uncertain birth time. If the time is approximate, read what changes without an exact birth time before drawing conclusions.

Example 2 from our calculation engine

The boy (born 23 December 1993, 02:20 IST, Kolkata) has his Moon in Pisces in Revati, pada 4. The girl (born 15 April 1993, 18:15 IST, Bengaluru) has hers in Capricorn in Shravana, pada 4. Both details are fictional.

Revati and Shravana are both Antya stars, so Nadi scores 0 and the report shows Nadi Dosha. The other kootas are healthy: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 1.5, Yoni 2, Graha Maitri 3, Gana 6 and Bhakoot 7, for a total of 22.5 out of 36.

Neither of the two common exceptions applies, because the Moons are in different signs and different stars. On the total alone this pair sits in the acceptable band, but with a Nadi Dosha present most families would want an astrologer's view before deciding anything.

A note on health and children

Tradition links Nadi Dosha with the health of future children, and that is the part that tends to worry families most. If a couple has a real concern about inherited health conditions, a doctor or a genetic counsellor can give information based on medical tests, which no form of horoscope matching can provide. Many families do both: they consult their astrologer about the dosha and speak to a doctor about health.

For the steps families usually consider when Nadi Dosha appears, see what to do if your kundli does not match. Nadi is often discussed together with the other all-or-nothing koota, Bhakoot.
