Sun-sign and moon-sign horoscopes

Most horoscopes you find online are sun-sign horoscopes. Your sun sign is set by your birthday, so it is the same for everyone born between the same two dates, and that is how the twelve signs on this page are organised. Vedic astrology usually works differently. A traditional Indian reading is given by Rashi, your Moon sign: the sign the Moon occupied when you were born, measured against the stars in the sidereal zodiac. The Moon changes sign every couple of days, so a Moon sign depends on your birth date and time, and it is thought to describe the mind and everyday experience more directly than the Sun, which takes a month to cross a sign.

How these readings are made

These entries follow the sun-sign convention but borrow the Vedic habit of reading the sky day by day. Each day we find where the Moon is and count which house it occupies from your sign, with your own sign as the first house. The Moon in your third house points to a talkative, curious day; the Moon in your tenth brings work and reputation forward. Because the Moon moves into a new house about every two days, and each sign counts from a different starting point, the reading changes daily and is different for every sign.

A Rashi reading counts from your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac, so these pages are not a substitute for one. The Kundli matching tool shows the Moon sign and nakshatra for any birth details if you want them.

How to read a daily entry

  • The sky panel shows the Moon’s sign and your house number, the nakshatra (the lunar mansion, one of 27) and the tithi (the lunar day) for that morning in New Delhi. They are the same values listed on the Hindu calendar page.
  • The overview combines the Moon’s house, the nakshatra and tithi, any close angle the Moon makes to another planet, and Mercury, Venus or Mars when they are retrograde.
  • Career, love, education, money and family lines come from the same house, read through each subject.
  • Weekly readings use the Sun, Venus, Mars and Mercury and any New or Full Moon in the week. Monthly readings use the Sun, the month’s New and Full Moons and Venus.

Mood, lucky number, lucky colour and the compatible sign of the day are light-hearted extras picked by a fixed formula; they are not worked out from the planets. Everything here is for reflection and entertainment, not advice on health, money or relationships.

When the readings change

Readings are prepared in advance from real planetary positions, and each page shows the reading for today’s date in Indian Standard Time, so it changes at midnight in India. The weekly reading changes on Monday and the monthly reading on the first of the month.
